The word Paraflage comes from Paradise and Camouflage — a hidden paradise, something beautiful that reveals itself only when you are willing to look differently.  Paraflage is not simply painting.

It is a construction of shapes, colours, layers, depth and movement, carefully composed to create a visual world that is open to interpretation. Within each work, forms can transform into landscapes, creatures, faces, symbols or something that has no name at all. You don’t simply look at a Paraflage.........You discover what your own mind sees.

Every viewer can experience something different. One person may see a creature; another may discover a landscape, a memory, a face, a dream or an emotion. There is no correct image hidden inside the work. What you see becomes part of the artwork.  That is the essence of Paraflage, the painting is created by the artist, but its meaning is created together with the person who looks at it. A doorway between worlds.

Paraflage also explores the space between the visible and the invisible.  The works are intended to create a moment of slowing down — a place where imagination can become more present and where thoughts, dreams and intuition can move freely. In this sense, Paraflage has a spiritual dimension. Not spirituality as a fixed belief or religion, but as an invitation to explore the inner world: dreams, intuition, emotion, connection and the feeling that there may be more to reality than what we immediately see.

The shapes and colours become a kind of visual language.  They can give form to things that normally have no form. A dream can become a landscape.  A feeling can become a creature. A memory can become a colour. A thought can become a shape.  Giving dreams structure. At the heart of Paraflage is the idea that dreams do not have to remain abstract.

By bringing shapes, colours and depth together, Servaes creates structures in which the imagination can wander — while still giving it a sense of balance. Paraflage is chaos finding harmony.
